Born in New York City and raised in Indiana, Eric H. Roth earned his BA in Philosophy from Wabash College in 1984 as a Lilly Scholar. After working as a news reporter, Roth received his MA from the New School for Social Research in Media Studies in 1988. Roth spent the next two years writing press releases and monitoring urban issues for U.S. Representative Stephen J. Solarz in New York City. Since arriving in Los Angeles, he has also taught numerous ESL courses at Santa Monica College, UCLA Extension, and Cal State Long Beach's American Language Institute. In 1995, Roth taught the first adult citizenship class in the Santa Monica-Malibu Unified School District. He helped establish an innovative citizenship program the following year at Community Enhancement Services Adult Education Center and served as its first academic director for three years. Hundreds of graduates, mostly refugees, became naturalized UnitedStates citizens.Roth currently teaches undergraduate engineering students and international graduate science students the pleasures of writing and public speaking at the University of Southern California. He also collects old postcards, browses used bookstores, and writes occasional op-eds. Roth has recently co-authored a book titled Compelling Conversations: Questions and Quotations on Timeless Topics - An Engaging ESL Textbook for Advanced Students. Toni Aberson, the co-author, taught English to high school and college students for 35 years.
