SUMMARY

The Communication Yearbook is an annual review of current research in communication published in cooperation with the International Communication Association. The series provides readers with the very latest and foremost research in the field of communication studies. Its format enables more fully developed and readable essays than are usually available in journals and provides ongoing dialogue among leading scholars through carefully selected commentaries. Communication Yearbook 17 continues in the series' tradition exploring significant issues from major scholars in the field. Divided into four sections, the first part focuses on interpersonal interaction, especially the constitutive processes within everyday communication, and is intended to complement the mass media focus of Volume 15 and the organizational communication focus of Volume 16. The essays in this section include reconceptions and micro-analyses of interaction processes examining knowledge construction and the "self"; culture and ideology; and narrative and institutional life. The second section focuses on message characteristics and what messages do in interaction. Topics range from abstract concerns with message comprehension to detailed reconsiderations of the relation of communication and health and the nature of emotional messages in the workplace. Part III considers value and policy issues in light of the ubiquitous nature of communication media and cultural pluralism. The final section discusses the future of communication studies and its potential social contribution. Commentaries on each chapter provide alternative perspectives on the state of current research, extend issues of significance, and help engage the reader in the contemporary debates in each area. Communication Yearbook 17 is an important research tool, offering a forum for public debate of leading issues. Students--and others less familiar with the field of communication--will find it to be an accessible entry into the latest insights and conceptions of major scholars in the field today. "The Communication Yearbook provides valuable perspectives on concepts and issues of mutual interest to communication studies and information Science. They [the essays] address many common concerns about meanings and behavioral impacts in human communication. It is these thoughts [communication is value-laden] that are worthy of consideration on the broadest scale." --The Library QuarterlyDeetz, Stanley A. is the author of 'Communication Yearbook/17' with ISBN 9780803954335 and ISBN 0803954336.
