Carol Shields's novels, plays, stories and non-fiction have won many awards. Her novel The Stone Diaries won the Governor General's Literary Award in Canada, the Pulitzer Prize and the National Book Critics Circle Award in the United States, and the Prix de Lire in France. Larry's Party won the Orange Prize for Fiction and was a finalist for the Giller Prize. In 2000 the government of France appointed Carol Shields a Chevalier de l'Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Her anthologies of women's writing (co-edited with Marjorie Anderson), Dropped Threads and Dropped Threads 2, were both national bestsellers. She won the 2002 Charles Taylor Prize for Literary Non-Fiction for her biography, Jane Austen. Her novel Unless, published in 2002, was a finalist for the Man Booker Prize, the Giller Prize and the Governor General's Literary Award.
