Alex Larzelere is a retired U.S. Coast Guard captain who served on seven cutters, five of which he commanded. His assignments included duty as the first coast guard aide to the president, two commands ashore, congressional affairs, and chief of search and rescue and chief of staff for the Seventh Coast Guard District in Miami. A 1958 graduate of the Coast Guard Academy, he also attended the Naval War College, where he was a distinguished graduate, and the National War College. He holds a master's degree in international affairs from George Washington University. While a senior fellow at the National Defense University, he wrote The 1980 Cuban Boatlift, selected by the American Library Association as a Notable Document of 1990. Among other awards, he has received the Legion of Merit from President Richard M. Nixon and the Bronze Star with Combat V.
