George Plumptre is one of the foremost authorities on garden design. He was born in 1956 and educated at Radley and Jesus College, Cambridge where he gained an honours degree in History. After leaving Cambridge in 1978 he embarked upon a career as an author, editor and journalist. It was as a garden writer that he became best known He also wrote for Country Life, Homes and Gardens and Architectural Digest. He lectured on gardens in England, the United States and in South Africa. In 1991 George joined Sotheby's as a consultant. He was editor of Sotheby's international magazine Preview for two years before moving to South Africa in 1997 as Sotheby's first resident director.
