I suppose they're all saying I messed up. Yes, well, I'd like to see you cope any better if you had a family like mine. I was only doing my best. But when you have a family straight out of Crazyville, "best" doesn't actually make that much difference. Like trying to clean up a gallon of spilled milk with a Kleenex. Personally, I blame them. The crazy family. Right now, I am sitting in the chicken coop on my own apart from the chickens. It's a good place to sit and think and try to work out where it all went wrong. And to wait. Chickens don't judge; they are good listeners. Well, obviously, they don't understand, but they do all the other things that good listeners do. Like nod. And not make totally stupid comments or do something grossly gross, like my brothers. And not say, "You should write it down as a story, Becca you'll feel so much better," like my dad. And not suddenly shout, "Got it!" and run out of the room muttering numbers and scattering bits of wire and pieces of not-quite-finished inventions, like my mom. Let me explain. Back to the day it began, about ten days ago. Only ten days? It feels like forever. ________________ CHICKEN FRIEND by Nicola Morgan. Copyright (c) 2005 by Nicola Morgan.
