Gerald Hausman is the author of more than fifty books for children and adults, many of them dealing with the theme of survival. As a licensed scuba diver and lifeguard, he has had many marine adventures of his own, from his days as a Sea Scout in the 1960s into the present. Between 1985 and 1993 Mr. Hausman ran the Blue Harbour School of Creative Writing on the island of Jamaica. There he taught a course in long-distance swimming, taking groups of boys and girls open-sea swimming to the offshore island of Cabarita, two and a half miles each way. This experience helped in the writing of several of the stories in Castaways.
