Growing up on a farm in Iowa, the young Bob Artley not only had prowess milking a cow but could skillfully draw any bovine's likeness with a pencil and paper. Bob was born in 1917 and raised on a farm near Hampton, Iowa, that had been in the family since 1877. He attended country school until 8th grade. After graduating from high school he attended Grinnell College where he studied art until drafted into the army in 1941. After the war he went to the University of Iowa where he studied more art and graduated in 1951. Artley's career as an editorial cartoonist began with the Des Moines Tribune and continued at the Worthington (Minnesota) Daily Globe where he launched his syndicated cartoon series, "Memories of a Former Kid." In addition to his cartooning, Artley had worked in advertising and with his wife, Ginny, published two weekly newspapers and operated their own commercial print shop. Ginny died in 1993 and he remarried in 1995. Now retired, he and his wife Margaret divide their time between their home in Florida and the family farm in Iowa, writing, drawing and painting. Artley's long-lived series of autobiographical drawings "Memories of a Former Kid" is his masterpiece and continues to be syndicated in daily and weekly newspapers. His series Country Things has also been syndicated.
