Anna Sewell was born in Yarmouth, Norfolk, at a time when England was referred to as a "hell for horses". A childhood injury left Sewell an invalid and thus relied upon a horse-drawn carriage for her mobility. A capable driver, she was noted for her ability to control her horses through the sound of her voice alone. Her Quaker upbringing and her strong love of horses made Sewell an advocate for their humane treatment. In Black Beauty, her only work, she exposes the cruel manner in which horses were treated and pleads for "kindness, sympathy and an understanding treatment of horses." Sewell died about a year after the book's 1877 publication, never fully witnessing her work's great and lasting impact.Sewell, Anna is the author of 'Black Beauty - Anna Sewell - Hardcover' with ISBN 9780681995505 and ISBN 0681995505.
