Benjamin Harrison was the grandson of President William Henry Harrison. A brilliant lawyer from Indiana and a general during the Civil War, he defeated Grover Cleveland for the presidency in 1888. Harrison supported high tariffs and government coining of silver. These policies caused higher prices and a government financial crisis. He also signed the Sherman Antitrust Act, the first major effort of the government to regulate large corporations. Harrison had a cold standoffish personality and offended many people even in his own party. In 1892 he was defeated by Grover Cleveland in the only campaign between two major candidates who had served as president.
