Beads are culturally, historically, and archaeologically important in Ghana. This book introduces the reader to the bead culture through the stories of people who produce, wear or trade beads. It explores how beads that are found in Ghana and in archaeological records came to Ghana, and why; tracing the three main channels: through trade over the Sahara, with Egypt and other middle Eastern and Islamic sources; over the sea from Italy, Bohemia and Holland; and from local sources in West Africa. It discusses the origins and developments of the industry, the specific meanings of beads to various west African ethnic groups, and how beads are made in Ghana. Published with the Ghana Bead Society, and for the Museum of Archaeology at the University of Ghana, this publication is intended to support a bead conservation project, and place the museum's bead collection in the public domain.Wilson, Alexandra is the author of 'Bead Is Constant', published 2003 under ISBN 9789964303037 and ISBN 9964303033.
