Atomic and Molecular Photoabsorption Absolute Total Cross Sections

Joseph Berkowitz was one of the pioneers in photoionization mass spectrometry in the 1960s. During this period, as a Guggenheim Fellow, he also became involved with photoelectrons and their angular distributions. As some general principles became evident, he systematized the fields of photoabsorption, photoionization and photoelectron spectroscopy in a pedagogic and data-based text (Academic Press, 1979). In subsequent years, he focussed on the photoionization of transient species, such as open-shell atoms and molecular free radicals. Meanwhile, synchrotron radiation sources evolved through second and third generations into powerful sources of vacuum ultraviolet and x-rays.
