International relations in the 1980s and 1990s were characterized by a proliferation of regional organisations and through the pooling of resources and sovereignty with smaller states in particular hoping to gain international bargaining power and to curtail the influence of transnational actors such as international, nongovernmental organisations (INGOs) and transnational corporations (TNCs). In addition, the so-called transregional fora stimulated new forms of interregional cooperation, which in turn in the case of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) and the Asia-Europe Meeting (ASEM) even encouraged some organisations to increase their capacities as actors on the international scene. Integrating political and economic research this book is a study of the relations between multinational or trans-national organisations in both Asia and Europe and considers the role of cross-continent organisations. The contributors discuss and assess the following issues: How should interfaces between inter-regional organisations to global organisations be managed? How are regional, interregional and global institutions "nested"? How relevant can the ASEAN-EU co-operation be considering its weak economic interdependence or its different institutional depth? Applying established theories to concrete phenomena, Asia, Europe and Global Governance provide a comprehensive understanding of inter-regionalism and how co-operation between Asia and Europe should be fashioned in the new millennium.Ruland, Jurgen is the author of 'Asia-Europe Relations and Global Governance' with ISBN 9780415450577 and ISBN 0415450578.
