First Lotus I like to arrive early in the morning at the pond so that I can watch the lotus flowers open before noon. Some years I am there at peak season, when the pond is crowded with bright pink blossoms, and I can see the color of the flowers a quarter of a mile away when I round the bend in my car. The year I did this painting, the flowers were sparse and late, but I was there just in time to see the first one open. The lotus flower's dramatic light shape was contrasted by the rich darks behind it, like a soloist on a stage.Whyte, Mary is the author of 'Artist's Way of Seeing ' with ISBN 9780941711753 and ISBN 0941711757.
