John Russell Young (1840-99) was born in Pennsylvania and started his newspaper career with the Philadelphia Press, accompanying the Army of the Potomac as a war correspondent for that paper during the Civil War. From 1866 to 1869, he served as managing editor of the New York Tribune, and from 1871 to 1877, he was the European correspondent for the New York Herald. Young was the American minister to China from 1882 to 1885.
