"Excavations beneath the new Royal Spa revealed a large Roman public building very possible a religious or leisure complex associated with the nearby Hot Spring. The spring itself produced evidence of votive offerings of coins ranging in date from 1st to 4th centuries. From an earlier period there was evidence of Mesolithic activity associated with the hot spring and under the Roman building. At Bellott's Hospital a Roman street and evidence of stone-buildings was uncovered.
