Apology of Socrates and the Crito

The Apology is Plato's most revealing dialogue about the man whose questioning mind laid the basis for Western philosophy. The Crito shows his refusal to flee his death sentence. Plato tells the story, perhaps verbatim, of the trial of Socrates, who defends himself against old enemies & new, with disarming personal appeals. His openness, however may be a calculated rhetorical strategy. The majority of Athenians vote to condemn him to death by hemlock. The Crito is a short sequel dialogue in which he explains his refusal to take flight when it is offered to him by Crito & others.
