Afeni Shakur was born in Lumberton, North Carolina. She now divides her time between her organic farm in Lumberton and Stone Mountain, Georgia (suburb of Atlanta) in a house which was purchased for her as a gift by Tupac. In 1997, she founded Amaru Entertainment, Inc. as a vehicle through which her son's work could continue to be legitimately released after his murder. Since then Amaru Entertainment has successfully released seven posthumous albums featuring unreleased music by Tupac which includes a spoken word album and a book of Tupac's original poetry both titled The Rose That Grew From Concrete, as well as the feature film Tupac: Resurrection, which includes a companion coffee table book and an accompanying soundtrack album. This is her first book. Jasmine Guy has known Afeni Shakur for nearly a decade, having met her via Afeni's son, Tupac. A multitalented performer, Guy began her career as a dancer for the Alvin Ailey American Dance Center. She moved to acting and television, however, with the starring role of Whitley Gilbert on the hit series A Different World. During the show's six-season run, Jasmine made her film debut in Spike Lee's School Daze and went on to costar in Eddie Murphy's Harlem Nights. Among many other things, Jasmine starred as Roxie in the road company Chicago, was one of the featured actors in the Vagina Monologues, and is now on the HBO hit series, Dead Like Me.
