Bruce Paton, M.D., was born in India, educated in Scotland, served as a lieutenant in Royal Marine Commando, graduated in medicine from the University of Edinburgh, and worked as a doctor in Kenya and Scotland before coming to the United States as a research fellow in surgery; he only intended to come for a year but ended up staying for 40! Paton served as chief of cardiac surgery at the University of Colorado for 20 years, then went into private practice in Denver. He has always been interested in history, expeditions, and the outdoors. He has climbed and hiked in Colorado, Europe, and Nepal, and has climbed Kilimanjaro twice. He is also the author of Lewis and Clark: Doctors in the Wilderness.
